'Torchwood' Lives Again!

By Paul Steven Brown

Looks like 'Torchwood' will be returning simultaneously in the US and the UK next summer thanks to a partnership between BBC Worldwide and the US cable channel Starz. Starz had branched out into original programming with the bloody 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' and the critically acclaimed 'Party Down'.  For those who do not subscribe to Starz, the channel's shows can also be found on Netflix for streaming.

'Torchwood' was the spin-off of the producer Russell T. Davies 'Doctor Who' relaunch and debuted in 2006 and was shown in the US months later on BBC America. Unlike the family friendly 'Who', 'Torchwood' was considerably more adult, featuring cursing, nudity, and violence. The show continued to improve over it's first two seasons but really peaked with last year's gripping five episode 'Torchwood: Children of Earth' mini-series which had a much quicker UK/US turn around compared to most shows that are aired on BBC America.

FOX was to develop a US version of 'Torchwood' starring the series central character Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), but they dropped the project last month. Apparently, the Starz backed program will bring back Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and introduce a new supporting cast. The scope is to be more international, so don't expect to see our heroes running around Cardiff week after week.

So, if all goes well expect ten new episodes of 'Torchwood' next summer.

  1. Yay!

Although Ianto probably won't be back, and that is very, very sad.

When I went to Cardiff in February there was a little fan shrine that had been cultivated around the HUB. It was cute!
